Irri - Garden

Major Steps/Timeline
Week 1. Creating a relationship with gardeners and urban gardening communities(lacgc) and making our product between week 1 & 2. Week 2. Testing our product on gardens then taking data and making any necessary adjustments. Week 3. Talk to the gardeners that we tested the Irrigation-Garden on and see what it benefited and what it didn’t.

Solutions facts from researching

  1. Solution Idea 1
Drip irrigation - The biggest advantage of drip irrigation is that it is very efficient in delivering water to the roots of plants. Water is not wasted by spraying large areas or wetting surfaces that don't need the water. As moisture is slowly delivered to the root zone there is less opportunity for evaporation. There is little to no water waste with a drip irrigation system that is properly designed and installed.
  2. Solution Idea 2
Overhead systems are the more traditional sprinklers that spray water above the targeted plants. These systems require less maintenance for your facility staff, but they might not be as efficient with water usage.
Ideal Community Partners:
Santa Monica Community Gardens, urban gardeners.
Potential Budget:
Potential $50 dollars for potential tools, water tank, and pvc pipes
Our idea is to make the irrigation system prices for small urban gardeners go down. Our prototype will be made out of PVC pipe and will have holes that are big for plants that consume lots of water, medium for plants that consume medium amounts of water, and small for plants that only need a little bit of water. The irrigation pipe will be connected to a water tank that will be made out of tubing, that will house the water. We will also have a timer that has a motor that stops and starts the flow of water to the tub. It is intuitive, and lets the gardener choose how long they want the water to run per day. Our area of focus is community gardens in Los Angeles around us.
